Sermathang is a Buddhist Sherpa
village in the foothills of the Nepal Himalaya. It lies directly north of Kathmandu and is
reached by a 6-hour bus ride and 8 hour trek from the capital. The village has 4 lodges
and trekkers provide an income for these families from October until March but the rest
are subsistence farmers and very poor. Consequently, many women leave the area to work in
India or Kathmandu making carpets for a pittance and send the money they earn back to
their families in the village. |
